Eden Prairie runners find success at Gale Woods race

Ahead of Saturday’s Metro Invitational at Round Lake Park, Eden Prairie boys and girls cross country compiled impressive finishes at the Bauman-Rovn Hopkins Invitational last Thursday at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista, site for the upcoming section meet in October.

Eden Prairie sophmore Leisl Paulsen won the 5,000 meter varsity race in a time of 18:46.62 running a 6:02 mile pace to beat out Lakeville South sophomore Brianne Brewster to the finish line by more than 14 seconds.

Eagles senior Malakai Holloway was 13th in 20:05.86 while sophomore Abby Jirele and senior Annie Lee finished 26th (20:30) and 27th (20:30.50) respectively. Rounding out the scoring runners for the Eagles was freshman Ella Bakken in 20:52.41 to place 35th overall to help the team garner 103 points to place third out of 15 teams.

In the JV race, Eden Prairie freshman Miriam Sandeen and sophomore Morgan Young finished sixth and seventh, respectively. Eden Prairie was also well represented in the middle school race with three Central Middle School eighth graders earning top-5 finishes as Haley Parker was third, Linnea Berndt was fourth and Megan Timmerman was fifth.

Eden Prairie varsity boys captured the team title with 83 points, 13 ahead of Channhassen and 16 points clear of third-place Hopkins. The Eagles had five runners among the top 24 times led by junior Jack Larson whose time of 16:40.57 was the sixth fastest. Three Eden Prairie runners finished within four seconds of each other with sophomore Jake Derouin 16th in 16:58.86, sophomore Mohamed Mohamud was 18th in 17:01.91 and senior Dave DeJong was 19th in 17:02.51. Junior Wes Donaldson was 24th in 17:12.68 and freshman Isaac Hartman was 25th in 17:12.96.

In the junior varsity boys race, Eden Prairie held five of the top eight times including a clean sweep of the top two finishes by junior teammates. Aidan St. George won the race in 18:13.27 ahead of Jose Schinas in 18:14.52. Freshman Ian Brown was fourth in 18:16.77 and sophomore Zach Spears was seventh in 18:21.77.

The Eagles host the Metro Invitational on Saturday which starts and finishes on the west side of Round Lake Park. Boys junior varsity is the first of six races at 9:30 a.m. with the boys varsity race beginning at 10:40 a.m. Girls varsity follows at 11:10 a.m. The meet concludes with boys middle school/C race at 11:45 p.m.
