Non-conference wins guide Richfield

The Richfield girls tennis team plays in one of the toughest conferences for tennis in Minnesota. With teams like Jefferson and Benilde-St. Margaret’s on the annual schedule, Richfield know sit has to take advantage of non-conference matches in order to gain momentum prior to the start of the conference schedule.

So far, Richfield head girls tennis coach Patricia Theriault has been pleased with what she has seen from her group.

Richfield opened the season with a 6-1 win over Minneapolis South Aug. 22. Junior Linh Trang picked up a key win at fourth singles, and the doubles team of freshman Bella Jurewicz and eighth-grader Cristina Furness-Rubio also picked up a key win at third doubles.

After a strong season opener, Richfield defeated Southwest Christian 5-2 Aug. 24. Senior captain Amelia Amundson led the way with a 7-6, 7-6 win at first singles. Seniors Tenzin Dekyi and Ashlyn Jones picked up a key 6-2, 6-1 win at first doubles and Trang (third singles), senior captain Sara McGinness (fourth singles), and Jurewicz and Allie Nelson (third doubles) also picked up wins for the Spartans.

Richfield picked up its first loss of the season 2-5 on Aug. 29, against Washburn. Dekyi and Jones won their first doubles match 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 to lead the Spartan effort. The third doubles team of Jurewicz and Nelson picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory.

Richfield rounded out its most recent action with a 5-2 win over DeLaSalle Aug. 31. Trang and junior Dar McPherson won at third and fourth singles, respectively, and Richfield won all three doubles matches. Dekyi and Jones won 6-0, 6-2 at first doubles, McGinness and Tenzin Woeser won their second doubles match 6-3, 6-0, and the third doubles team of Furness-Rubio and Diem Tran won the match 6-3, 6-2.

Richfield will play next against Cooper at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, at Richfield High School. The Spartans will host their annual 100 sets fundraiser from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, at Richfield High School.
