Wins over Holy Family, Benilde and Eagan mark strong three days to begin 2017
Three matches. Three wins. Three days.
That’s how Eden Prairie boys soccer started the season under direction of longtime coach Vince Thomas last week.
The Eagles opened the season with a 3-1 win in Victoria against neighboring Holy Family Catholic on Aug. 28 thanks to a pair of goals from senior Luke Haverkamp and the other from senior captain Sean Kurtenbach. Senior Alan Analco set up two goals and goalkeeper Mchael Goergen took the victory in 80 minutes between the posts.
Eden Prairie hosted budding rival Benilde-St. Margaret’s the next night at Aerie Stadium for the home opener. The result was the same from the previous night with the Eagles emerging with a 4-0 shutout over the St. Louis Park school.
Kurtenbach picked up two goals while Jovani Flores and Oscar Hernadez also tallied goals. Assists went to four teammates including Kurtenbach, Joey Kolleh, Analaco and Alberto Hernandez. Goergen made two saves for the cleansheet.
Senior Axel Romo had one goal and one assist in a 3-1 win at Eagan to complete the week on Thursday, Aug. 31. Alberto Hernandez also scored and Kobe Perez picked up his first assist of the season.
Goergen earned the win, conceding only his second goal in 240 minutes of play so far in 2017.
Eden Prairie continues a four-match road trip Tuesday, Sept. 5 at Minnetonka in the Lake Conference opener before Thursday, Sept. 7 at Prairie Seeds and Tuesday, Sept. 12 at Wayzata. The next home match for the Eagles is Thursday, Sept. 14 against Hopkins at 7 p.m. before the team heads to Fargo, North Dakota for the annual team trip. They will face Fargo South Sept. 15 (4:30 p.m.) and Fargo Sheyenne on Sept. 16 (noon).
