The League of Women Voters Bloomington will host a forum for candidates appearing on the Bloomington City Council primary ballot next month.
The forum is 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 18, at Bloomington Civic Plaza, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road.
The city will hold a primary election Aug. 8 to narrow the field of candidates from four to two for the council’s District 2 seat and one of the council’s at-large seats. Candidates vying for those seats have been invited to the LVW forum, where they will have an opportunity to make opening and closing statements, express their positions on issues and answer audience questions.
Candidates for the District 2 seat are Lenny Klevan Schmitz, Cheryl Lewis, Shawn Nelson and Eldon Spencer. Spencer was appointed by the council to fill the vacant seat earlier this year.
Candidates for the at-large seat are Michael Arulfo, Nathan Coulter, Kim Vlaisavljevich and Susan “Hofmeister” Woodruff. Vlaisavljevich was appointed by the council to fill the vacant seat last year.
Candidates advancing to the November election will be invited to an Oct. 3 forum that will include candidates vying for the council’s District 3 and 4 seats. The October forum will also include school board candidates.
The forum will be recorded for broadcast on Bloomington’s cable television channel. The League of Women Voters is a nonprofit organization that does not endorse candidates or parties.
