Bloomington elementary wins school district food drive

Bloomington Public Schools and its business and civic partners collected more than 19,000 pounds of food and $9,104 in cash donations during its ninth annual district-wide food drive that concluded recently.

This year’s total collection is 64,786 pounds when cash donations are converted into pounds of food. For each dollar donated, up to five pounds of food can be purchased. All of the food and cash is donated to Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People, a nonprofit serving low-income families and individuals in Bloomington, Edina and Richfield.

The annual food drive has collected more than 400,000 pounds since its inception in 2009.

Bloomington’s public schools, early childhood centers, central departments and business and civic partners participated in the drive.

Westwood Elementary School’s 10,023 pounds took top honors for the second straight year. Westwood’s business partner, Walser Buick GMC, contributed 1,480 pounds of the school’s total.

The Parent Teacher Student Advisory Council, Bloomington School Board and its Youth Advisory Council coordinate the annual food drive.
