I think it’s safe to say that if you’re one to celebrate “nerd culture,” this is a pretty good week for you.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe gets expanded further with the release of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” on Friday; Wizard World’s Minneapolis Comic Con kicks off on the same day; and Saturday, May 6, marks the annual Free Comic Book Day around the country.

To celebrate the latter, Wizard World will team up with comic shops in Des Moines, Philadelphia, Sacramento, Albuquerque, Columbus, Orlando, Chicago, and Nashville (all upcoming Wizard World destinations) to give out a limited supply of Wizard World “Walking Dead” variation.

In addition, the first 500 Saturday attendees at Wizard World Minneapolis will receive an exclusive variant comic.

“Local shops are the cornerstone of the entire comics entertainment industry,” Wizard World CEO John Maatta said in a release. “Everything that has sprung from the industry in the past 50 years–the books, the characters, the fandom, the culture – all started at the comic shops. What was originally fringe is now mainstream; and yet even so, there are tons of niche groups devoted to their favorite characters, genres, and media. The stores provide a home-away-from-home for fans of all types, a meeting place in real life to discuss their passions with fellow fans and to find the latest adventures of their favorite characters.”

“The comics community is very important to us, and we at Wizard World strive to promote the efforts of many sides of the entertainment industry.”

To that end, inserted flyers will also promote noted comics industry nonprofits Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, which supports First Amendment rights, and Hero Initiative, which provides financial support to creators in need.

Hours for Wizard World are 4-9 p.m. Friday, May 5; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 6; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 7. For more information go to www.wizardworld.com/comiccon/Minneapolis.
