Hornet girls enter hockey playoffs

Lake Conference powers Eden Prairie and Edina are the top two seeds for the Section 2AA girls hockey tournament, which begins with games at local sites Friday, Feb. 8.
In an 8 p.m. game, the second-seeded Edina squad will play No. 7 Prior Lake at Braemar Arena. The winner will advance to the second round Tuesday, Feb. 12, against No. 3 Bloomington Jefferson or No. 6 Holy Family/Waconia.
Edina coach Laura Slominski, who has taken her team to state four years in a row, is optimistic.
“Obviously, Eden Prairie has proven itself worthy of the No. 1 seed,” said Slominski. “Looking around the state there’s a lot of parity, and I don’t think you could say there’s any section that’s clear cut.”
Edina warmed up for the playoffs with a pair of impressive wins last week.
The Hornets closed their Lake Conference schedule with a 4-2 win over Wayzata Jan. 29 at Braemar. In a Feb. 2 game, the Hornets shut out Hill-Murray 1-0 with goalie Boomer Sonnek turning away 30 shots.
“Boomer had a really good game against Hill-Murray,” said Slominski. “The consistency piece is there.”
Against Wayzata, the Hornets had to face a deep team with good senior leadership, and it took a solid effort to win. Taylor Williamson and Sarah Nielsen each had two goals.
Nicole Rash’s goal in the first period Saturday was all that Sonnek and the Hornets needed to beat Hill-Murray.
