Bloomington prep basketball enthusiasts were able to witness a doubleheader at Jefferson High School jan. 15. Kennedy’s girls and boys basketball teams responded with a sweep over Jefferson.
No. 1-ranked Kennedy used aggressive defensive play and a potent fastbreak to defeat Jefferson 81-42 in South Suburban Conference girls basketball action during the second game of the doubleheader.
The Eagles are now 14-2 overall and first in the league with an 8-0 mark. Jefferson is 4-11 overall.
Four Kennedy players scored in double figures — Jade Martin (18), Jasmyn Martin (17), Tonoia Wade (15) and Kenisha Bell (14).
Jefferson’s Gabby Smith netted 14 points. Katelyn Byers scored nine points and Allison Riermersma had six points. Erin Loughrey finished with five points.
Jefferson’s girls team lost a hard-fought 48-47 decision to Apple Valley later Jan. 18. Riermersma led Jefferson scorers with 15 points. Janell Lorton scored 10 points and Sydni Starling had eight points.
The first part of the doubleheader was a competitive affair before Kennedy prevailed for a 53-48 boys basketball win over Jefferson. Jumah’ri Turner led the Eagles with 17 points.
The game was tied in the final two minutes before Kennedy made several clutch free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.
Both Kennedy and Jefferson teams have compiled 4-8 records.
Kennedy’s boys basketball team will travel to Eastview for a 7 p.m. game Thursday, Jan. 24. The Eagles remain on the road to play Burnsville at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25. Kennedy faces visting Lakeville North at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29.
Jefferson’s boys basketball squad is on the road for 7 p.m. games against Rosemount (Jan. 24) and Eagan (Jan. 29).
In upcoming girls basketball action, Kennedy is home to play Burnsville at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, and will travel to Lakeville North for a 7 p.m. game Tuesday, Jan. 29.
Jefferson will play host to Rosemount at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, and remain home to battle Eagan at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29
Boys hockey highlights
Kennedy dropped a 5-4 decision to St. Cloud Apollo in a non-conference boys hockey game Jan. 19. Brad Hinrichs scored twice for the Eagles. Jacob Roers and Tait Carlson scored one goal each. Goalie David Johnson was busy making 29 saves.
Jefferson lost a 4-3 overtime game to Centennial Jan. 15 in another non-conference boys hockey game. Charlie Straus, Johnny Panvica and Jon Lindquist recorded Jaguar goals. Assists went to Lindquist, Zac Beek, Alex Robbel, Tyler Johnson and Panvica. Goalie Grant Martens was credited with 25 saves.
Girls hockey highlights
Britta Mach scored twice for Jefferson during a 5-3 loss to Eagan Jan. 19. Kelsey Cline netted the other Jaguar goal. Olivia Spellmire had two assists. Holly Dietzler contributed one assist.
Kennedy sustained a 5-3 non-conference girls hockey loss to Princeton Jan. 19. Kalli McCullen had a hat trick for the Eagles. Lauren Hoese, Hannah Currin and Sabrina Smith (2) were credited with assists. Christina Nelson was in goal for the Eagles.
