Jaguars claim section True Team swim title
It was one of the most successful weeks of competition that a Bloomington Jefferson swimming team has experienced during the past decade.
The Jaguars won the Section 2AA True Team boys swimming championship with a total of 1,149.5 points Jan. 19 at the University of St. Catherine in St. Paul. Jefferson advanced to this weekend’s state True Team meet after winning the section title.
State True Team competition begins at 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
Jfferson won the seven-team section title outlasting second-place Cretin-Derham Hall (1.142.5). Minneapolis Southwest finished third (987).
“It was a great accomplishment made possible by a great team effort,” said Jefferson coach Nate Linscheid. “This was our first section True Team title and we beat a Cretin team that has won this meet every year.
“We had a number of firsts, but it was the depth provided by a group of sophomores and juniors that helped us win the championship.”
Jefferson seventh-grader Andy Pfau earned the diving championship with a score of 317 points.
“We didn’t know Andy was going to be this good as a diver entering the season,” said Linscheid. “But he had some gymnastics experience and has been willing to learn.
“He is our only diver and has done a great job.”
Charlie Hynes was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 1.37 seconds.
Jefferson’s winning 200 freestyle team of Roth Fricke, Michael Foss, Sam Gleason and Hynes posted a winning time of 1:37.16.
Jefferson had several other high finishes in the section True Team meet. Hynes was second in the 200 freestyle (1:52.58).
Jefferson was fourth in the 200 medley relay with a cast of Pat Koob, Cal McDevitt, Anthony Kieran and Fricke.
Fricke finished fourth in the 50 freestyle (23.83) and fifth in th 100 freestyle (53.24). Kieran was second in the 100 butterfly (57.91). Jacob Upton was fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:35.58).
Koob placed fourth in the 100 backstroke (59.74). McDevitt was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1;07.86).
Jefferson was fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:33.88). Reeve Bowling, Koob, Cullen Propp and Hynes were relay team members.
