After 13 years on Prairie Center Drive in Eden Prairie, My Gym Children’s Fitness Center is expanding in its new location on Flying Cloud Drive.
The new location in the SportsWorks building is a perfect fit for their gym, said Tedra Bonner, who co-owns the gym with Shelli Kargela. The building also houses a swim club, a gym for adults and a chiropractor.
They were excited and nervous to move locations, but the families are liking the new location, Bonner said.
“Our business has been growing as fast as our students over the past few years!” Kargela said.
As small business owners, My Gym is their life. The biggest thrill of the job is watching the children at the gym grow up, Bonner said. Families attend the My Gym classes from around the Twin Cities metro area.
“We feel like part of these families’ lives,” she said.
The gym, which offers classes for children from six months old to 13 years old, previously had only one room. It now has enough rooms to run classes simultaneously.
The age-appropriate classes are a chance for kids to get active, build their confidence and interact with other kids in a positive environment, she said.
Parents participate in the classes with their children until they’re 3 years old in what Bonner called “physical education for toddlers.” She added that it’s a chance for parents to have one-on-one time with their child – to see their child building sports, listening and motor skills – in an environment that promotes an active and healthy lifestyle.
The structure of the classes remains, but the classes change week to week with new equipment, new songs, new dances, new skills.
Children also have a chance to do a zipline across the gym once a month.
The gym’s largest classes are karate, which begin at 4 years old. The first group of karate students who began at My Gym will be testing for the black belt this spring, Bonner said.
They also offer ballet, jazz and junior hip hop classes that focus on building the dancer’s confidence and self-esteem.
They also plan birthday parties for kids ages 1 to 9 with the goal of making the birthday child feel special, she said. They have the children at the party play structured games taught by the instructors that engage all the children.
