Richfield’s Ali places 10th in national cross-country meet

Richfield High School junior distance running standout Obsa Ali continues his climb as one of the best high school runners in the state and country.

Ali competed in the NXN Nike National cross-country meet Dec. 1, in Portland, Ore.

The Spartan athlete competed against 198 high school runners from around the nation and finished 10th overall with a time of 17 minutes, 30 seconds on the 5,000-meter course.

Ali had to overcome a talented field and muddy running conditions to earn his 10th-place finish.

“The times were slow because everyone was running in water and mud most of the time,” said Ali.

Many athletes had to tape their shoes to their feet to make sure they didn’t get stuck in the mud.

Ali pushed the pace late in the race to earn his 10th-place finish.

“It was my best race ever, not with time, but being able to run against top high school runners in the nation,” said Ali. “It was a great experience and the trip was awesome.”

Ali earned his trip to the nationals by placing third in the Nike Heartland Invitational Midwest Regional Meet 5,000-meter race Nov. 11 in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was third out of 331 runners in that meet.

Ali competed for Richfield High School’s varsity cross-country team this past fall season and placed second in the state Class AA meet.

Ali has put away his running shoes for the high school winter sports season while competing on the Richfield/Edina Rampage wrestling team.
