Emma Lofthus of Edina, a junior at Luther College, was one of three students selected to present their work at the 2012 modern languages conference Streamlines on Nov. 10 in Dubuque, Iowa.
Lofthus, a 2010 graduate of Edina High School, is a French major with a music minor at Luther.
She presented her paper, “Socio-Political Implications in Hugo’s ‘Le Roi S’Amuse’ and Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto,’” in which she describes her research about the French play by Victor Hugo that was turned into an Italian opera by Giuseppe Verdi.
“The biggest thing I learned was that it’s possible to enjoy research and doing homework when you have a topic that you’re passionate about,” she said.
Streamline’s mission is to encourage students to use their intellectual, spiritual, imaginative and emotional development to grow as a person.
