Late recognition for a Vietnam veteran

Purple Heart presentation

Bloomington resident Mike Kirkpatrick, right, receives congratulations from U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar after being presented with a Purple Heart during a Nov. 10 ceremony in the Bloomington City Council chambers. The Purple Heart is given to military personnel wounded in war by an enemy. Kirkpatrick, 67, was injured by an explosive device in Vietnam while serving as a hospital corpsman in the Navy. He treated two wounded soldiers at the scene before receiving treatment for his injuries, and never received a Purple Heart. The soldiers reunited last year and worked with Klobuchar’s office to obtain the award for Kirkpatrick. (Photo by Mike Hanks – Sun Newspapers)
