Breaking: Richfield Police name officers involved in shooting
Reading a written statement Monday afternoon, Richfield Police Chief Todd Sandell announced the names of the officers involved in the fatal Oct. 5 shooting of a man inside a home on the 6600 block of Park Avenue South in Richfield, maintaining he was confident an investigation will find that the officers acted in the right.
Those involved in the incident, which occurred around 9 a.m., were Sgt. Mark Shelley, a 20 year veteran on the force, 23-year-veteran Officer Tom Blair and Officer Brian Wroge, 16-year-veteran. “I am confident that this investigation will determine that our officers acted in accordance with department policy and procedure and will be determined that this was a justified course,” Sandell said.
All three officers have been put on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure in such cases, Sandell said.
He directed part of his statement to the family of Jeffrey O’Connor, who police say was wielding a knife when authorities responded to a domestic disturbance at the residence, shooting and killing him at the scene.
“The Richfield Police Department expresses out deepest sympathy to the family of Jeffrey O’Connor for their loss; and to our officers involved in this incident, thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families,” Sandell said.
The police chief would not answer questions following the statement he gave Monday afternoon inside the Richfield City Council Chambers. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
